An Amazing Race

by DShan on May 11, 2009

It’s really not often that you get to watch the world watch your friends do incredible stuff.

Last night, a friend of mine, Tammy Jih, who’s dating an even better friend of mine, won The Amazing Race and won it in a come from behind final leg in Hawaii.  Her and her brother won a million dollars and quite a bit of public awareness.

I don’t watch reality television.  I really don’t.

Usually.

Obviously, that all changed with this season of a race around the world, in which my Sunday evenings were spent worrying about Roadblocks and U-Turns and pulling for the Jih’s to get to the final leg.

Then, they got themselves into the final and it all seemed too surreal.  The fact that someone I knew might win a huge cash prize and a 40,000 mile race just seemed crazy.  The fact that during episodes early in the race she was able to recount her experiences and answer our questions and talk about the other contestants as friends or foes but NOT give away the race’s result is astounding.

The show revealed Tammy and Victor to be determined and smart, but considerate and honest.  I think the best thing about watching them win was watching them portrayed as good people.  We all know that television will pigeon-hole people, and I think the two of them managed to compete without stepping on their competition.  It’s just so cool.  All of it.

It’s just so, so cool.

  • Even though I haven't yet seen the final episode thanks to a trip this weekend, I do forgive you for being my spoiler. If I knew some of the contestants, I'm not sure I'd be able to keep my excitement contained, either. And while I definitely DID NOT like the way Victor treated Tammy in the beginning of the show, I think he learned some important lessons along the way and changed for the better (or at least that's how the editing made it appear). Yay for your friends for winning. Now, I'm looking forward to watching the show at some point this week!

    That's really awesome!

I've made friends with people in my favorite band -- Mucca Pazza -- and so it's just this wild experience going to their concerts. I've been to friends' shows before, but well, generally their bands aren't one of my all-time favorites. So when I go I get to dance around and have a great time, but also share small moments like glances, giggles, high-fives, and just small little things where I can go "hey, I know them..." ...

As far as other things go... I've had some friends in Lonesome Jim... and another friend who's out in NY working on all sorts of projects and music videos... but she's a tech, so you don't hear as much about the awesome stuff they do (unless you read her blog updates)...

Anyway!! That's really awesome. I'm glad you'll get to go celebrate with your friends!!
  • i've never watch the amazing race but how cool is it to watch your friends on tv?! congratulations to them!!
  • Cool :) Congratulations to them! This season of the show was one of the best.
  • That is pretty cool! Congrats to them both :)
  • Pretty darn cool, I gotta say. I'm headed out there this week...although
not sure Tammy will be around.
  • Oh. Muh. Gaw. I tuned in last night and was SO HAPPY FOR THEM! In all honesty, I'm a reality television whore. This season of the race was awesome because there was a lot of camaraderie, especially towards the end. I was proud of all three final teams, but I was especially happy for you and your friends!! Congrats to all :-)
  • I agree that the camaraderie was impressive, really. The cabs rides to the
finish line were heartbreaking after Tammy and Victor won.
