Geek Bonnaroo

If you’re not sure what Bonnaroo is, it’s the mecca of current music festivals.

If you are aware of Bonnaroo, and you just got your pants all bunched up because you think Coachella or Lollapalooza or Lilith Fair takes the crown as the mecca of music festivals, I’ll just say that you should try to avoid getting pants bunched up in general, and that Bonnaroo really re-ignited the concert scene for a large portion of the concert-going scene the first time it came around.  Agree to disagree.

Anyway, at the end of this week in Austin, South By Southwest kicks off with their Interactive session, which what they call the geeky stuff.  South By Southwest actually transitions from the geek scene into the music and film sessions with lots of overlapping, but all in all the first few days are what I’d call Geek Bonnaroo.

And I get to go.

The blogger network I have the great fortune to run on my free time is built on top of the social networking platform that a company called Ning created.  Ning announced a very late contest offering to take a handful of their Network Creators to the conference, and I applied thinking that I’m the kind of person who never wins contests.

I was wrong.

I found out a few days ago that I did indeed win, and that I’d be joining Ning at Geek Bonnaroo to spread the word about their platform and to basically meet thousands of other geeks in a never-ending party of tech, music, food, and dry Texas sunshine.

Sooo, yeah…I’m heading to Austin, Texas on Friday to attend a conference I’ve wanted to attend since it was first conceived.

I’m beyond pumped.

I actually won a contest!

Have you won a contest before?

Do tell!

Are you going?  If you are I’m sure we’ve already connected on twitter or plancast, but if not definitely reach out.  One place you should find me is the Glass + 20SB Happy Hour on Sunday at the Ginger Man.

  • Lucky bird! I've never won a contest...
  • Congratulations on winning and getting to go to Austin! I'm incredibly jealous you're there, but I cannot wait to hear about what you've learned and who you got to hang out with.

    Have a fantastic time!
  • Congrats, and have a blast! The only thing I can remember winning are a stack of 10 cds from Q101 when I was in high school. Woo. My mom takes the cake though with winning a trip to Australia for a week. Although one time she won a stuffed animal instead of a cruise, so maybe there's hope for the future after all.
  • It's all uphill from ten cd's, that's for sure:)
  • the only contest i ever won was a "text to win" radio station contest last summer. i won tickets to see john mellencamp, willie nelson, and bob dylan. it was a horrible show and i'm glad i got to go for free because all those other schmucks paid $80 to be there!
  • Haha that's awesome Stefanie. I love two of those three artists, and I'd
never pay $80 to see them first of all because Mellencamp was there and
second because they are all skeletons of themselves.
  • yeah, i love dylan and willie but it was not a great show. we got there late and missed half of willie's set which was pretty disappointing. then mellencamp played and that was just horrible. then dyaln came out and i literally couldn't understand a single word he was saying or singing. willie still puts on a pretty good show though!

i think your experience at sxswi is going to be much better though!
  • Haha. SXSW will be more geek than anything else.

I saw Dylan about two years ago and he was fading fast then. Faaast. I'm
not sure he's got much left, although in the studio he could stay relevant
if he went the Man In Black route. Johnny Cash had nothin' left but he did
some pretty sexy stuff in his last days...
